Music Therapy now available at Hear and Say Ashgrove

Hear and Say is pleased to partner Music Beat Therapy Services at our Ashgrove centre, giving children and families convenient access to evidence-based music therapy every Thursday.

Music therapy uses the power of music to support a range of developmental and functional goals. Through singing, movement, instruments, musical play, improvisation and other evidence-based techniques, Registered Music Therapists can support areas including communication, social interaction, emotional wellbeing, cognitive development, motor skills and auditory processing.

How does music therapy work?

Registered Music Therapists are tertiary-qualified allied health professionals trained in the therapeutic use of music. Music provides a powerful stimulus for the brain and can be used in structured ways to engage attention, encourage interaction and support the development of everyday functional skills.

Music Beat’s therapists are registered with the Australian Music Therapy Association (AMTA) and work within a person-centred, neurodiversity-affirming approach. Therapy is tailored to each participant’s individual strengths, interests, needs and goals.

New individual participants begin with a three-session assessment period. This gives the therapist an opportunity to build rapport and understand the participant’s needs, capacity and functioning, developmental skills, auditory processing and perception, emotional wellbeing, responses to music and musical preferences.

Following the assessment, families receive a comprehensive report outlining potential functional music therapy goals and recommendations for ongoing support. Goals are developed collaboratively with participants and their families or support networks.

NDIS funding for music therapy

Music therapy is recognised by the NDIS as an allied health therapeutic support and may be funded through Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living, where it is considered a reasonable and necessary support and delivered by an appropriately qualified Registered Music Therapist.

Music Beat Therapy Services is a registered NDIS provider, with other funding and self-funded options also available.
