About the group

This time in any teenager’s life is challenging- you are getting more independent, developing you won identity/self-concept while trying to navigate the transition to life after school.  If you have a hearing loss you are faced with an extra set of challenges.  It is the goal of this program to help build the resilience and self-advocacy skills needed to be successful.  Being part of this group will allow you to meet other teens with hearing loss, work together to overcome challenges and learn from each other’s experiences.

Hear to Live is a Group Social Skills program designed for young adults with hearing loss in grades 11 and 12. This age can be challenging for anyone but for those with a hearing loss it comes with additional hurdles. Hear to Live aims to build resilience and self-advocacy skills and provides the opportunity to meet others in a similar situation.

Program Benefits

Hear to Live has a strong emphasis on the specific self-advocacy skills that are crucial to post-school success for young people who have hearing loss. These skills include:

  • Understanding hearing loss, and strategies to address their communication challenges
  • The best use and maintenance of hearing aids, cochlear implants, and other listening devices
  • Awareness of what the appropriate supports are for someone with a hearing loss in the workplace and tertiary education, such as university or TAFE, settings
  • The ability to identify and access technological and support
  • Understanding your own legal rights in tertiary education and the workplace
  • Knowing when and how to request help
  • Knowing how and deciding when to disclose a hearing loss

 

Our Hear to Live program led by experienced staff is designed to help older teens and young adults in years 11 and 12 develop skills necessary for successful transition.  Over the two days we aim to build confidence, social interactions, resilience, and independence in a safe environment while engaging in fun challenging activities.  Opportunities are provided to connect with peers in similar situations and learn from each other’s experiences.
