Common signs of speech delays

For children who may be experiencing speech or language development delays, there are a number of signs to look for. With that said, it can be tricky to ascertain if a child is simply taking longer to reach a milestone or whether they are having communication difficulties.

Some key signs of speech and language delay in the first two years include:

  • Not producing single words by 15 months of age
  • Not saying two words together by the time they’re two years old
  • Finds it difficult to follow a set of instructions
  • Experiences difficulty putting words together in a sentence
  • Leaves words out of sentences
  • Not able to understand what is being said to them (even at a basic level)
  • When they do produce speech, it is not clear or hard to understand

Hear and Say specialises in supporting children who have been diagnosed with a hearing loss however also works with children who do not have a hearing loss, and may be having speech and language difficulties. Our team of qualified speech pathologist work across:

Speech pathology for children

Before commencing speech pathology for children, the first step is to complete a comprehensive speech and language assessment which will establish your child’s developmental level and detail how well they communicate and interact with those around them.

Specialised speech pathology for children with hearing loss

Each child has a unique hearing journey – whether they are diagnosed at birth via the newborn hearing screen or whether their hearing loss is detected as a toddler or during school.

With a combination of intensive therapy known as listening and spoken language therapy, children can grow up to hear and speak just like their siblings and friends.

Referral

Each families referral pathway is different. If your child is born with hearing loss, you may be referred to our Early Intervention program via your Family Support Facilitator. If your child is having possible speech and language delays, you may be referred to us via your GP or teacher. You can also self-refer at any time if you have any concerns.

Speech Therapy FAQs

Speech therapy is provided for children who are having difficulties with their communication and speech and language development. Before starting speech therapy, our team will undertake a speech and language assessment to establish your child’s current developmental level and outline how they’re interacting and communicating with the people around them.

Whilst you don’t need a referral for speech therapy, you can get a Team Care Plan or a GP Management Plan (GPMP) to access some Medicare rebates. If you have private health, access to extras cover might also be an option.

The cost of speech therapy ranges and is largely dependent on the length and number of sessions required.

Speech therapy is not fully covered by Medicare however if you talk to your GP you might be able to get a Team Care plan or GP Management Plan (GPMP). You could also be eligible to obtain NDIS funding for a speech pathologist.

At Hear and Say, our team of qualified speech pathologists provide individually tailored strategies for families which can be practiced in their home setting with their child. The overall effectiveness of speech therapy depends on how much practice is carried out in outside of the speech pathology appointment.

A speech therapy appointment or session typically goes for about 30 to 45 minutes on a regular basis. It will be dependent on the goas identified in a child’s speech and language assessment.

The age in which a child should commence speech therapy will differ depending on the delays they could be experiencing. As soon as you have a concern relating to a speech or language delay, a speech and language assessment is encourage as early intervention is key to outcomes.
